05/09/08. El lunes de la semana
pasada mientras asistíamos atónitos a
la samba que interpretaban el actor Cristián
de la Fuente y su pareja de baile Cheryl Burke, De la
Fuente se lesionó en directo, desgarrándose
el tendón de su brazo izquierdo. Al día
siguiente el público decidía que el actor
no debía abandonar “Dancing With the Stars”
y él explicaba que, pese a necesitar una operación
inmediata, esperará hasta que su participación
en el show finalice.
Esta semana no podría haber ido mejor para este
chileno que lleva 10 años viviendo en Estados
Unidos. Los jueces le han otorgado la máxima
puntuación hasta el momento y él y su
pareja continúan en competición. El juez
Bruno Tonioli dijo durante la emisión de este
lunes que las cosas que podía hacer el actor
con un solo brazo eran mágicas y De la Fuente
bromeó acerca de que debería haber empezado
a bailar con un solo brazo mucho antes.
Apenas tres días después de que De la
Fuente se lesionara Excélsior tuvo la oportunidad
de hablar con el actor sobre su efervescente carrera.
Cristián, cuéntanos cómo estás
Tengo que operarme apenas termine el programa porque
es la única forma de reparar el tendón,
por el momento lo que tengo que hacer es no mover el
brazo mucho, no hacer fuerza con él y seguir
en competencia sin usarlo para no dañarlo más.
Todo un reto…
Sí, y esto sumado a que tengo dos pies izquierdos
y ahora un brazo derecho (risas).
¿Esto de “Dancing With the Stars”
te está ayudando a que te conozca cada vez más
gente?
Ayuda, la exposición que da es grandísima
y apenas termine este show el 1 de junio se estrena
una nueva serie que hice en USA Network y se llama “In
Plain Sight”. Y también la publicidad y
promoción que voy a tener para esa serie va a
ser muy grande. Además uno va conquistando el
cariño de la gente poco a poco y aunque haya
conquistado el cariño de una persona más
eso va a ayudar para que más talento latino cada
vez pueda estar en televisión.
Esto del baile… ¿te había llamado
la atención antes?
El baile me gustaba y yo pensaba que bailaba bien pero
hacerlo de la forma que lo estoy haciendo ahora es completamente
distinto y es un sacrificio mayor que a la vez tiene
una satisfacción muy grande.
Es casi un trabajo a tiempo completo, ¿verdad?
Estamos ensayando ocho horas diarias de miércoles
a domingo, lunes y martes tenemos show y llevo dos meses
y medio sin descansar un solo día. Apenas termine
este show lo primero que tengo que hacer es hacerme
la cirugía y lo segundo es irme a dormir (risas).
Háblanos un poco más de tu papel en “In
Plain Sight”
Soy Rafael Ramírez, un jugador de pelota. Estoy
muy contento de poder interpretar un modelo positivo
para los hispanos. Además muchas veces en series
de televisión los escritores tienen pensado un
personaje y yo tengo que adaptarme a él.
Esta es la primera vez que he sentido que el escritorha
adaptado en cierta manera el personaje a mí.
El personaje tiene un acento y no tengo que esconderlo,
el personaje tiene mi sentido del humor y tiene muchas
características que son mías.
“Dancing with the Stars”, “In Plain
Sight”, estás en la lista de los más
bellos de People…
Yo creo que todo suma. Una escalera está compuesta
de muchos peldaños y eso es lo que estoy haciendo
en mi carrera, construyendo peldaño a peldaño
la escalera que me va a ayudar a seguir avanzando.

05/09/08. Last week
while we were being amazed by the samba
performance of actor Cristián de
la Fuente and his dance partner Cheryl
Burke, De la Fuente was injured live,
tearing the tendon in his left arm. The
following day the audience decided that
the actor should continue in the show
and he explained that, although he needs
immediate surgery, he was going to wait
until his participation in the show was
over.
This week couldn’t have been better
for this Chilean who has been living in
the United States for the last 10 years.
Judges have given him the best score so
far and he and his partner are still on
the competition. Judge Bruno Tonioli said
during this Monday’s program that
the things that De la Fuente could do
with one arm were magic and the actor
joked about the fact that he should have
started dancing with one arm quite before.
Only three days after De la Fuente injured
himself Excelsior had the opportunity
to talk to him about his effervescent
career.
So Cristián, how are you?
I need to have surgery once the show is
over because it is the only way to fix
the tendon. For the time being I have
to avoid moving the arm a lot, don’t
force it and remain in the competition
without using it.
Quite a challenge…
Yes, and have in mind that I have two
left feet and now only one right arm (laughs).
So I bet “Dancing With the Stars”
is helping you be more popular?
It helps. It gives you a great exposure
and once this show is over, on June 1
debuts a new series that I did in USA
Network called “In Plain Sight”.
And the promotion for that is also going
to be great. Besides, people learn to
care for you little by little. Even if
I only get to conquer the appreciation
of one more person, that is going to help
to get more Latino talent on TV.
Had the dancing bug bitten you before?
I liked dancing and I thought I did it
well but to dance the way I am doing it
now is completely different and it’s
a bigger sacrifice, though the satisfaction
is great.
It’s almost like a full time job,
right?
We are rehearsing eight hours a day, Wednesday
to Sunday. Monday and Tuesday we have
show. I haven’t rested a single
day for the last two months and a half.
The moment the show is over, I am going
to get the surgery, the second thing that
I am going to do is sleep (laughs).
Tell us a little bit about the character
you play in “In Plain Sight”
I am Rafael Ramirez, a baseball player.
I am really happy to be able to play such
a positive model for Hispanics. Besides,
most of the time in television the writers
have a character in mind and I have to
adapt myself. This is the first time that
I felt the writer had adapted in some
way the character to match me. The character
has an accent and I don’t have to
hide it, the character has my sense of
humor and has a lot of my characteristics.
“Dancing With the Stars”,
“In Plain Sight”, you are
one of the most beautiful in People’s
list…
I think everything adds up. A staircase
is made of a lot of steps and this is
precisely what I am doing with my career,
building a staircase step by step to help
me to keep making progress.
