08/15/08. Pocos actores tienen
la oportunidad de interpretar al personaje de sus sueños
durante su carera. Para la actriz y bailarina Gabrielle
Ruiz interpretar al personaje de Diana Morales en “A
Chorus Line” ha sido su sueño desde que
tenía 12 años.
“Es una bendición poder hacer este papel
tan temprano en mi carera. Ha sido grandioso”,
dijo Ruiz durante una entrevista telefónica.
“A Chorus Line” cuenta la historia de 17
bailarines que esperan ser contratados para una nueva
producción de Broadway. Zach, el director, busca
un grupo robusto de cuatro hombres y cuatro mujeres,
pero quiere aprender de las vidas de cada uno de los
bailarines antes de hacer sus selecciones. Aunque el
grupo se muestra reacio al principio, sus miembros acaban
contando algunas historias de su pasado.
El personaje de Diana Morales es fuerte. Originalmente
del Bronx, Nueva York, la bailarina puertorriqueña
siempre es honesta, a veces un poco demasiado honesta,
y bien precavida. Tiene el honor de cantar la famosa
“What I Did for Love” (“Lo que hice
por amor”) escrita por el compositor Marvin Hamlisch.
Para Ruiz interpretar a un personaje tan fuerte no fue
fácil. Esta bailarina mexicana nació y
creció en Edinburgh, Texas, y tuvo que aprender
cómo ser firme y defenderse cuando asistía
a la escuela preparatoria pública. Ruiz explicó
que se inspiró en algunas de sus propias experiencias
para crear una representación efectiva de Diana
Morales para el musical. Después de ser aconsejada
por el coreógrafo de la producción, Ruiz
encontró una inspiración para el personaje
de Diana Morales en la vida real.
“La relacioné con mi prima Lisa. Finalmente
llegué al punto de ser más fuerte y de
no tener miedo”, dijo la actriz y bailarina de
23 años. “En general, eso me ayuda en mi
actuación”.
“He interpretado este personaje por cuatro meses
y veo que a veces Diana sale en la vida real”,
añadió. “Soy un poco más
fuerte en la manera que digo algunas cosas”.
La acción del musical transcurre en 1975, cuando
no había muchos bailarines étnicos en
grupos numerosos, pero el personaje de Diana Morales
se niega a cambiar su nombre y lucha por triunfar como
bailarina puertorriqueña. Ruiz dijo que se identifica
con el personaje de Diana.
“Es grandioso que Diana esté orgullosa
de su cultura y también de poder usarla”,
comentó Ruiz. “Ser latina en esta industria
es bien específico. Nunca voy a poder ponerme
una peluca rubia mejor que otra gente podría
hacerlo. Es una ventaja poder llevar mi cultura conmigo”.
“Poder hacer este personaje y cantar ‘What
I Did for Love’ y ‘Nothing’ (‘Nada’),
con las que mucha gente se puede identificar, es algo
de lo que estar realmente orgullosa”, añadió
Ruiz.
Dream of 'A Chorus Line'
comes true

get the chance to perform their dream
role throughout their career. For actress
and dancer Gabrielle Ruiz playing the
role of Diana Morales in “A Chorus
Line” has been her dream since she
was 12 years old.
“It’s really a blessing to
be able to do this role so early in my
career. It’s been really great,”
Ruiz said in a telephone interview.
“A Chorus Line” tells the
story of 17 dancers hoping to be hired
for an upcoming Broadway production. Zach,
the director, is looking for a strong
ensemble of four men and four women, but
he wants to learn about each of the dancers
before making his selections. Although
reluctant at first, the group tells stories
of their pasts.
The character of Diana Morales is tough.
Originally from the Bronx, New York, the
Puerto Rican dancer is always honest,
sometimes too honest, and very guarded.
She has the honor of performing the famous
song by composer Marvin Hamlisch, “What
I Did for Love.”
For Ruiz, playing such a strong person
wasn’t an easy task. Born and raised
in Edinburgh, Texas, this Mexican dancer
had to learn to be assertive and stand
up for herself while attending public
high school. Ruiz said she had to draw
on some of those experiences to create
an effective representation of Diana Morales
for the musical. After some advice from
the show’s choreographer, she found
a real-life inspiration for Diana and
used that to create the character.
“I related her to my cousin Lisa.
I finally got to that point to be tougher
and not be afraid,” said the 23-year-old
actress and dancer. “And that helps
me with my acting in general.”
“I have been doing this role for
four months and I find that sometimes
Diana comes out in real life,” she
added. “I’m a bit tougher
in the way I say things.”
The musical takes place in 1975 when there
weren’t many ethnic dancers in major
ensembles, but Diana Morales refuses to
change her name and strives to be successful
as a Puerto Rican dancer. Ruiz said she
can identify with Diana’s character.
“For Diana to really be proud of
her culture and to be able to use that
as well is great,” Ruiz commented.
“Being a Latina in this business
is very specific. I will never be able
to wear a blonde wig better than someone
else could. It’s really an advantage
to be able to carry my culture with me.”
“To be able to do this role and
sing ‘What I Did for Love’
and ‘Nothing’, which a lot
of people can connect with, is really
something to be proud of, personally,”
Ruiz added.
